It occurs as a fibrous powder or granules, white, yellowish-white or grayish-white, odorless, tasteless and somewhat hygroscopic, especially after drying. The name methylcellulose is usually followed by a number, which indicates the approximate viscosity provided by a 2% solution, at a temperature of 20\u00baC. Slowly soluble in cold water, producing a viscous, clear or opalescent colloidal solution; practically insoluble in hot water, but dissolves on cooling, in acetone, alcohol, chloroform, ether and toluene; soluble in a mixture of equal parts of alcohol and chloroform, and in glacial acetic acid. A 1% aqueous solution has a pH of 5.5-8.0. Solutions can be autoclaved. NO ORAL USE.<\/p>",
