Odorless or practically odorless white flakes or powder, granulated or crystalline with a sweet and astringent flavor. Due to the action of heat, it melts, releasing vapors of benzoic acid. It is inactivated at pH below 5. The aqueous solution is slightly alkaline to litmus: pH 8. Incompatible with salts of alkaline earth metals, and of heavy metals, substances of acid reaction, with iron peptonate Sol.: 1 g dissolves in 1.8 ml of water, in 1.4 ml of boiling water, in 47.5 ml of alcohol (90%), in 75 ml of absolute alcohol<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sodium benzoate.
