White or almost white crystalline powder or acicular crystals or rhombic tables, colorless, with a weakly characteristic odor, sugary and then spicy flavor. The 5% aqueous solution is neutral to litmus; It does not give off a phenol odor when heated and does not leave a residue that can be incinerated. The 5% resorcin solution gives, with ferric chloride, a violet-blue color, which turns brownish yellow with ammonium sulfide; with lead subacetate, white precipitate; with bromine water, crystalline precipitate of tribromo-resorcin. Reduces ammoniacal silver nitrate solution.
