A viscous, transparent liquid, more or less yellow, sometimes brownish, quickly melts, burning with a very fuliginous flame. It is practically insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol, carbon disulfide, chloroform, ether, some fixed and volatile oils, glacial acetic acid and dilute solutions of alkali hydroxides. Partially soluble in petroleum ether.
